India is the largest coconut producer in the world, but it is a thin origin for export-grade desiccated coconut. The crop is huge, and most of it is eaten, pressed or processed at home. For a trader or broker, India matters as a price influence and a niche supplier, not yet as a replacement for the Philippines, Indonesia or Sri Lanka.
That distinction is worth money. Treating India as a volume origin means chasing offers that cannot be repeated by the container. Treating it as a specialist origin means using it for the lots where it fits and keeping the core programme elsewhere.
How big is India’s coconut crop?
India accounts for 31.24% of world coconut production and 17.90% of world cultivated area, according to an August 2026 official factsheet. Output in 2024-25 was about 20,301 million nuts from roughly 2.19 million hectares, an average of 9,249 nuts per hectare, per secondary summaries of Coconut Development Board data.
Productivity is the tell. India gets a large share of world output from a smaller share of world area, but the crop is spread across many small holdings in 22 states and union territories. Scale on paper does not translate into aggregated, spec-ready supply.
Which states matter for a buyer?
Three states carry most of the conversation. Kerala has the largest area, at nearly 7.54 lakh hectares (about 754,000 hectares), producing about 5,150 million nuts. Tamil Nadu leads on production. Andhra Pradesh records the highest productivity. Those figures come from the same sector summary, and the leadership in area, output and yield sits in different states.
For the desk, the practical split looks like this. State-level 2025-26 production figures and Karnataka’s numbers were not available in sources we could verify, so they are left out here.
| State | Known strength | What it means for a buyer |
|---|---|---|
| Kerala | Largest planted area | Dense smallholder base; coconut oil and domestic culinary demand are strong |
| Tamil Nadu | Highest production | Copra-linked pricing; farmers lobby for state procurement when prices fall |
| Andhra Pradesh | Highest yield per hectare | Better farm productivity; check processor capacity before assuming export lots |
Why is so little of it export desiccated coconut?
Domestic demand and the copra support price shape the market first. The government set the 2026 minimum support price at Rs 12,027 per quintal for milling copra and Rs 12,500 for ball copra, up Rs 445 and Rs 400 on the previous season. A quintal is 100 kg.
A support price sets a floor under what farmers expect for nuts. In June 2026, farmers in Thanjavur asked the cooperative marketing body NAFED to begin procurement after local copra prices reportedly fell sharply. That is a farmer-association claim, not official data. It still shows where raw material goes when prices soften: into state-backed copra channels, not export desiccated.
India’s export story is also built on other products. Coconut-product exports reached about Rs 7,038 crore in 2025-26, a 62% annual rise. Activated carbon, made from coconut shell, is the largest export by volume. Desiccated coconut is listed among the major export products, but a value or volume breakdown was not published in what we found.
What does export readiness look like?
The Coconut Development Board runs export promotion. According to an official Lok Sabha answer from February 2025, that covers registration and membership certificates, market intelligence, buyer-seller meets, trade fair participation and help with quality certification. The Board had registered about 8,700 coconut-product exporters by 31 July 2026, per IBEF.
Registration is not the same as a qualified supplier. A buyer still needs the same documents asked of any origin: a certificate of analysis, a phytosanitary certificate, and a microbiological record that shows the kill step was validated. Our note on reading a desiccated coconut COA lists what to check.
Indian desiccated coconut is not separately quoted in the trade-press price reports we found, so any Indian offer is unbenchmarked until a second origin quote sits next to it.
How should a buyer test an Indian supplier?
Start with a trial lot, not a programme. Ask for three things before a purchase order:
- A full spec sheet with fat, moisture, free fatty acid and sulphur dioxide, matched against your own limits. See high-fat versus low-fat desiccated coconut for the ranges.
- The processor’s kill-step validation data. Our note on the Salmonella kill step explains what good evidence looks like.
- Retained samples from at least two production dates, so you can see batch drift.
Then compare the landed cost against your current origin, including freight and the extra QA cost of a new supplier. Cheap ex-works pricing that needs a second inspection round is not cheap.
Where does India fit in a multi-origin programme?
As a secondary origin for specific lots. A second source is only useful if it can match the first on spec, and that is the test India has to pass supplier by supplier. Our guide to holding one spec across origins sets out the contract terms that make a switch safe.
Policy is also moving. The Union Budget 2026-27 introduced a Coconut Promotion Scheme covering seedlings, replanting and integrated processing units. New processing capacity would help export supply, but plantings take years to bear, so it changes the picture slowly. Re-check the origin each season instead of assuming this year’s offers will repeat.
What this means for buyers
- Procurement managers (A): use India for trials and secondary lots; keep the core spec with an origin that has audit history.
- Importers (B): do not plan container programmes on Indian desiccated supply until a supplier shows repeat lots across two seasons.
- Brand owners (C): if a co-packer offers Indian coconut, ask for origin documents and the processor’s certifications in writing.
- Traders and brokers (D): watch Tamil Nadu copra prices and MSP procurement news; they signal how much raw nut leaves the export chain. Our piece on the copra cycle covers the mechanics.
FAQ
Is India a major exporter of desiccated coconut? Not on the evidence we found. India is the largest coconut producer, but its export growth is led by activated carbon and other value-added products. Desiccated coconut is listed as an export, without a published volume.
Which Indian state has the most coconut area? Kerala, with about 7.54 lakh hectares. Tamil Nadu leads production and Andhra Pradesh leads productivity.
What is the 2026 copra support price? Rs 12,027 per quintal for milling copra and Rs 12,500 for ball copra.
Does the Coconut Development Board certify exporters? It issues registration and membership certificates and supports quality certification. A buyer should still run its own supplier approval.
