RBD vs virgin coconut oil: specs, applications and spreads

RBD and virgin coconut oil come from the same nut and carry the same fatty acid profile. The split sits entirely in how the oil is handled after extraction. That choice sets yield, permitted additives, packaging, shelf life and price.

Choosing wrong costs money twice. RBD against a clean-label brief fails the label claim. Virgin bought as a bakery fat pays a premium for aroma that deodorisation removes anyway.

Coconut oil averaged 1,924 USD per tonne in July 2026, down 29.4% from its Q3 2025 peak, on the World Bank Pink Sheet series. That series tracks crude. For virgin, no published index exists at all.

What separates RBD from virgin coconut oil?

Process, not composition. The Codex Standard for Named Vegetable Oils, CXS 210-1999, carries a single coconut oil entry. Both grades sit under the same composition table: lauric acid 45.1 to 53.2% of total fatty acids, iodine value 6.3 to 10.6.

RBD means refined, bleached and deodorised: caustic neutralisation to strip free fatty acids, bleaching earth to pull colour bodies, steam deodorisation to remove volatile odour and flavour.

Virgin is a generic process definition in Codex clause 2.2: oil obtained by mechanical procedures and heat only, purified by washing, settling, filtering and centrifuging. Cold pressed is the same route with no heat.

The Philippine National Standard for virgin coconut oil sets the ceiling: processing must not exceed 90 °C, and chemical addition is barred. Deodorisation runs at 150 to 250 °C. A refined oil cannot be relabelled virgin. The definitions exclude each other by method.

One term to discount: “extra virgin” has no basis in the coconut oil standards.

Which specification limits actually differ?

Fewer than most spec sheets imply, and two run opposite to expectation.

Codex allows virgin oil a higher peroxide value than refined, 15 against 10, and an acid value roughly 6.7 times higher. Most commentary states this backwards. Deodorisation strips peroxides, so a fresh RBD parcel tests near zero while virgin legitimately carries more.

Two parameters buyers routinely contract on appear in no standard: Lovibond colour and smoke point. Both are trade custom. Specify them if needed, but call them contractual, not compliance failures.

The bigger catch is legal weight. Codex states that a product meeting the essential composition factors but missing these supplementary figures may still conform. Free fatty acid, peroxide value and moisture are advisory; only fatty acid composition and slip point are essential. That is why oils trade on FOSFA-style terms, where the spec is enforceable, and it mirrors the logic behind indexed contract structures.

What does refining cost in yield?

Between 5% and 7.5% of crude weight. The FAO post-harvest compendium, prepared with the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, puts typical loss at 5%, rising to 7.5% on poorer feedstock.

  • Neutralisation. Sodium hydroxide forms soapstock with free fatty acids, dosed at 1.50 kg per tonne of crude per 1% FFA.
  • Bleaching. Activated carbon or bleaching earth at 1 to 2%, under vacuum at 95 to 100 °C, then filtered out with oil retained in the cake.
  • Deodorisation. Live steam under vacuum at 150 to 250 °C, removing volatile odours, flavours and peroxides.

That is why crude FFA sits in every refining contract. A parcel at 4% FFA rather than 2% carries more caustic cost and more soapstock loss.

What is the price spread between the grades?

For virgin, no citable spread exists.

Crude is well covered. The World Bank publishes a coconut oil series, CFR North West Europe, and Fastmarkets assesses crude FOB Philippines daily. Neither covers RBD or virgin.

Coconut oil rose 63.3% in 2025, then gave back 29.4% from the Q3 2025 peak by July 2026. It now trades at a 517 USD per tonne discount to palm kernel oil, its closest lauric substitute, having carried an 18.5% premium on the 2025 average. For buyers with formulation flexibility, that reversal is the number to act on.

Virgin sits outside all of it. Coconut oil falls under a single HS heading covering the oil whether or not refined, so virgin volumes are not separable in customs data. Virgin is relationship-priced. Lock price and spec together, or agree a formula against the crude series plus a stated processing differential.

Which grade goes where?

Argue from the standards, because no reliable volume split exists.

RBD suits industrial and bulk food processing. Neutral colour and odour survive blending. Codex permits refined oils an antioxidant list including TBHQ at 120 mg/kg and BHT at 75 mg/kg, capped at 200 mg/kg combined, plus polydimethylsiloxane for deep-frying oils. Tighter iron and copper limits hold oxidation down in long storage. Bakery fats, confectionery, frying, creamers, MCT feedstock and soap sit here.

Virgin suits retail, clean label and nutraceutical. Additives are prohibited, and the Philippine standard requires the extraction route declared on the label. A bottled proposition, not a bulk ingredient.

How do you verify a virgin parcel is not cut with RBD?

Use the absorbance test. The Philippine standard sets spectrophotometric absorbance at 278 nm to a maximum of 1.5, by UV-Vis. Refining generates UV-absorbing species, so a virgin parcel carrying refined oil fails this line. It is the only adulteration marker written into a national standard here, and it is under-used on incoming COAs.

Sterol profiling does not help. Both grades share a botanical species and a sterol range, so sterols detect foreign oils but never separate refined from virgin. That error sits on many qualification checklists.

ATR-FTIR with multivariate curve resolution was validated for seed-oil adulteration of virgin coconut oil at 5% and above in Molecules in 2023. It did not test refined oil as the adulterant, so treat it as a method reference, not a proven RBD screen.

Record 2025 prices raised the incentive to cut virgin with refined. Run the line on every lot, the discipline applied to reading a commodity COA.

What changes in storage and shipping?

Coconut oil is solid at temperate ambient. The Philippine standard records solidification below 25 °C, so a European or North American winter discharge needs heating before the cargo pumps.

Heating is rate-limited. Guidance for edible oil cargoes from the International Institute of Marine Surveying caps heating at 5 °C per 24 hours, holds steam at or below 150 kPa gauge, and calls for daily monitoring at three levels of the cargo column.

Run that arithmetic before fixing a laycan. Lifting a cargo from 10 °C to 30 °C takes four days.

Grade drives packaging too. Bulk RBD tolerates the heat cycling of flexitank and ISO tank movement. Virgin, held to a peroxide value of 3.0 meq/kg and labelled for storage away from sunlight, has far less headroom, which is why the desk moves it in drums and IBCs. What this means for buyers

  • Procurement managers: write the spec contractually. Codex quality limits are advisory, so FFA, peroxide value and moisture bind only because your contract says so. Add absorbance at 278 nm to any virgin spec.
  • Traders and brokers: coconut oil at a 517 USD per tonne discount to palm kernel oil in July 2026, against an 18.5% premium on the 2025 average, is a substitution signal.
  • Refining buyers: price inbound FFA. Every extra 1% costs 1.50 kg of caustic per tonne plus soapstock loss, inside a 5 to 7.5% refining loss.
  • Winter discharge: budget four days of heating from a 10 °C arrival at the 5 °C per 24-hour ceiling.

FAQ

Is virgin coconut oil higher quality than RBD? Neither is inherently superior. Codex allows virgin a higher peroxide value and acid value than refined. Virgin retains aroma; RBD delivers neutrality, permitted antioxidants and lower metal limits. Match grade to application.

Can refined coconut oil be sold as virgin? No. Virgin is defined by process. The Philippine standard caps it at 90 °C and prohibits chemical treatment, while deodorisation runs at 150 to 250 °C. The routes exclude each other.
